2024 already greeted us with a spectacular «Dune: Part 2». This could easily become the year that saves cinema from its ‘post-COVID syndrome’ (period of deadlock due to struggles in filmmaking during the global pandemic). We’ll see big comebacks from iconic blockbusters, including an anticipated crossover. Various genres will be represented, beginning with horror and ending with biopics. And we shall not forget about cinephiles, as they will be greatly fed this year with some authentic indie films with unmatched vibes. So let’s finally find out which movies are the most awaited, to be able to keep up with the cinematic tendencies this year.
1. Challengers (26 April)
Challengers, the latest film by Luca Guadagnino (best known for «Call Me by Your Name»), stars Zendaya from «Euphoria». The film centers on a sizzling love triangle between Zendaya’s Tashi, her husband Art (Mike Faist), and their buddy Patrick (Josh O’Connor), with a tennis backdrop. Tensions rise on and off the court as past relationships collide.
2. Love Lies Bleeding (3 May)
A delight for all A24 fans, as we are getting fed with yet another astonishingly cinematic story. «Love Lies Bleeding», Rose Glass’s second film after Saint Maud, stars Kristen Stewart as a gym manager from a criminal family who falls for a bisexual bodybuilder, played by Katy O’Brian.
3. Back To Black (10 May)
Industry’s Marisa Abela plays the famous singer Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s biographical film. From Winehouse’s perspective, the movie chronicles her journey from being a rising star until the release of her album «Back to Black».
4. Deadpool and Wolverine (26 July)
According to Fandango, the third part of the franchise, which stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is the most anticipated summer movie of 2024. This is the first time for Walt Disney Studios to produce a Deadpool film after acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019.
5. Joker: Folie à Deux (4 October)
After 5 years of anticipation, Lady Gaga will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ follow-up to «Joker», where Gaga plays Harley Quinn in this musical thriller, and Phoenix reprises his main role as Arthur Fleck, a failed comic turned criminal.
6. Gladiator 2 (22 November)
Iconic director Ridley Scott finally releases the sequel to his 2000’s Best Picture winner, «Gladiator». The story will take place over 20 years after the events of the previous film, following a grown-up Lucius (Paul Mescal) as he inherits Maximus’ legacy. The cast also features Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn, and other iconic actors.
Just looking at this list, it’s obvious the cinemas won’t be empty this year. Plenty of movies to choose from that’ll fit everyone’s tastes and interests, so let’s dive into the world of cinema together and enjoy the upcoming films with a dear company of friends.
