Olya, thank you for joining me. How are you feeling today?

Hello, I’m doing great, thank you.

To begin with, could you introduce yourself and tell us a little about Luna?

My name is Olya. I am 15 years old, and I have a Chihuahua named Luna. She is almost four, and she knows around 50 commands and tricks. For example, she can sit down and lie down. She can also walk on her front paws, and she can walk backwards.

How did dogs become such an important part of your life?

I started spending all my free time with Luna, and she has been an important part of my life since the day I got her. Before that, I had been dreaming about having a dog for seven years.

What made you want one so much?

Our friends had dogs, and I always liked spending time with them.

Now, coming to Rally Obedience — what made you try it in particular?

For a long time, I thought that Rally Obedience would be impossible for us, but I was inspired by my friends who trained their dogs, and I decided to try it.

Before you started, what did you expect from the sport, and what did you discover once you actually began training?

I didn’t think that the sport would be easy, but I believed that training a dog would take much less time. I thought I would be able to teach Luna some commands in one month, but I spent five or even more. For example, the command “heel” — when a dog has to walk by your feet while you walk — we spent around five months on it, and now we are working on improving it.

That sounds much more demanding than people usually expect. For those who have never heard of Rally Obedience, how would you explain it in simple words?

Rally Obedience is a dog sport where you and your dog follow a path with signs that give you commands like sit down, lie down, and heel. Everything is based on the heel command.

What usually happens during a competition, and how do you prepare Luna before entering the ring?

First, you get a number. If it is one, you perform first. Then you warm up your dog and get your dog focused on you. For that, we can do some funny commands, like just running. It is also a physical activity. Usually it takes around three minutes, and that is enough. After that, you go into the ring and perform together.

So even before the performance, focus already matters a lot. Which exercises were easiest for Luna at first, and which were hardest?

The easiest commands were sit down and lie down. The most difficult was heel because the dog has to be very focused on you.

What skills are important in order to do well in Rally Obedience, and how do you personally motivate Luna during training?

In all dog sports, the most important skills are motivation and good communication with the handler. In Rally Obedience specifically, the most important exercise is heel. For this, the handler has to find the best way to motivate the dog. Some dogs are motivated by food and others by toys. Communication is the most important thing, and everything is based on it. To motivate Luna, I always use food because she doesn’t like playing and she doesn’t play often.

What makes Rally different from other dog sports like agility or classic obedience?

Rally Obedience is different because it is calmer and more flexible. Unlike agility, Rally doesn’t require speed or physical strength. Compared to classic obedience, the rules are less strict, and handlers can talk to and encourage their dog during the course.

Have you ever considered agility?

I was thinking about agility, but it is very expensive, so now I prefer Rally Obedience.

I’ve seen you use the word “reinforcement” in your Telegram channel. What does it mean in dog training?

Reinforcement means making a behavior happen again. For example, if Luna does something well, I give her food, and she understands that when she does well, she gets a reward, and she does it again.

So it’s really about helping the dog understand what worked. What does a normal training session with Luna look like?

First, I have to get her into a working and fun mood. I can run with her or ask her to catch some food. We usually start with active commands, and then I ask her to do more difficult exercises. Sometimes we train normal obedience, and sometimes we just practice fun tricks.

How often do you train, and how long are your sessions?

They are usually around ten or fifteen minutes. We train three times a week, sometimes more and sometimes less.

When you teach a new exercise, what is most important for you, and how do you understand that she has really learned it?

I focus on explaining everything correctly because if I show something wrong, Luna remembers it. When she makes mistakes, I ask her to repeat the exercise, and I can help her. If she doesn’t understand, I can show food and show the right direction. I know she understands an exercise when she does it almost without my help.

Have your training methods changed since you started?

I haven’t really changed methods, but I started making fewer mistakes. For example, before I didn’t use markers. These are words like “yes” that tell the dog she is doing well. In Rally-O, emotions and words are also very important.

If we talk about your relationship with Luna outside training, how would you describe it?

I try to build trust in my relationship with Luna. She trusts me, and I trust her.

Do you remember a moment when you really felt that trust, and what do you do when she does get distracted?

I remember when there were a lot of people in the mall, but Luna was very motivated and didn’t get distracted by other dogs and people. But sometimes, if she doesn’t react to me, I can use leash correction. I can pull the leash a little and ask her to look into my eyes, and I reward her when she does it.

What was the hardest thing for you when you first started Rally Obedience?

I didn’t know any rules, so it was a little difficult to teach Luna. I didn’t know how to do it correctly. But thanks to my friend — she is a cynologist, and she always helps us and improves our training. Also, sometimes when something didn’t work in training, I kept practicing and learning from my mistakes. Results and progress helped me keep going.

Let’s talk about competitions. Could you tell me about your first one?

Our first competition was in February. We had been preparing for it for eight months. At the beginning of the course, Luna didn’t listen to me, but after that she did everything well, and the mistakes were only mine. We got 85 points out of 100, which is considered very good. We took first place.

That must have been a huge moment for you. What did you learn from that experience, and how did you feel emotionally during it?

Now I understand that competitions aren’t about showing your level. They are about improving your skills. They also help the dog learn to work in a noisy environment. Back then, I was more nervous for Luna, but her behavior depended on me. As I said, the mistakes were only mine. I expected that everything would be much scarier, but all the people there were very kind and they helped me.

Looking back now, what has Rally Obedience taught you about communication?

Rally Obedience has taught me not only about communication with dogs but also with people, because at competitions I found good people who give me advice on cynology and support me. A few years ago, I thought it was impossible when people taught their dogs even simple commands, and I didn’t think I would be able to do it myself.

What do you hope to improve next?

I would like to do the command “heel” better and also improve our contact and motivation. That is our main goal.

Finally, if someone watching this interview is curious about Rally Obedience, what would you want them to know first?

First, I would want them to know that the sport is suitable for most dogs of different breeds. They can try it. They can watch some videos on YouTube about Rally Obedience and learn some tricks.

And what advice would you give to someone who wants to start training with their dog but feels inexperienced?

The most important thing is practicing. I recommend practicing more, reading on the internet about cynology, and working on your interaction with your dog and motivation.

Yulia Filipchenko

Photo: Pexels – Alexasfotos

Today I’m speaking with Olya about her dog Luna and about how Rally Obedience helps build communication, trust, and a real partnership between a person and a dog.
