The age of social media and TikTok is constantly creating beauty, fashion and lifestyle trends. With the recent return of the “be thin” trend, many users began to question how social media affects their self-esteem. In this article, we will explore the negative impact it can have, but also ask: is there anything positive about it?
“You Should Be Very Pretty – Or Don’t Show Your Face”
When scrolling through TikTok we see countless creators who fit conventional beauty standards. They dress, act and look perfect. These creators often receive a lot of comments praising their appearance.
But what happens when someone doesn’t fit into these norms- maybe they have acne, are overweight or simply look different? Sadly, they are usually criticized and mocked in the comments. There are often more insults than words of encouragement. And while there’s nothing wrong with these people, they are treated as if they were worse than others.
As a result, many viewers- especially teenagers and young adults still developing their self-image, are affected by such negative comments. Even if they’re just reading the comments they may start to question their own worth and ask, “What is wrong with me?”.
A Bad Example Is Contagious
Many influencers create a highly unrealistic picture of their lives. They don’t show that they have well-paying jobs, sponsorship, or any help behind the scenes. A lifestyle filled with designer clothes, luxury apartments or daily spa visits is not typical. Unfortunately, people who watch them, consider it to be true. And what if your life looks different?
Meanwhile, most people live simpler, more ordinary lives: small apartments, mass-market clothes, eat out on special occasions. Many people seem to forget that they are part of the norm and what they see online is staged. This affects our self-esteem and we begin to wonder if we are or aren’t enough.
“Buy This Product and You’ll Be Beautiful”
Many companies build their business on people’s insecurities. They imply that you’re not attractive unless you use their product. This is especially the case with cosmetics. Another lip gloss ad promises that your lips will become bigger and more attractive. Face cream commercials claim that only their product will make you look younger.
A lot of girls spend money to buy tons of cosmetics because they believe they will make them look better. Unfortunately, it is all a lie. What many people don’t realize is that beauty exists in all of us and it is not our appearance that counts. Beauty is not something you can buy.
Is There Anything Good About Social Media?
Despite all this, social media can still have a positive impact on self-esteem. Now many influencers embrace the trend of sincerity and many start to show themselves from a different side. They share more of their experiences and show their non-ideal life. While watching such videos, you start to feel better and more confident. You realize that many people have a simple life just like yours.
There are also creators who document their progress towards personal goals. Their stories can motivate and inspire you. Additionally, there are communities where people share experiences and find support.
Conclusion
Social media can make you or break you – it’s all up to you. Promote more positive content on social media and ignore the hate. Focus on your self-esteem and don’t let anyone have the power and control over you and your life.
